( ↓ English version below)

Wandering Light and Shadow — Lin Bao Ling: New Works & Selected Paintings Solo Exhibition

By Szu-Tu Chia-Hui

Flashing and mesmerizing nightscapes unfold beneath the brush of urban painter Lin Bao Ling. Through dramatic contrasts of light and darkness, he defines the forms of cities immersed in deep night. Illuminated glass façades layer distant and nearby skyscrapers, while glowing shop windows, signboards, street lamps, and headlights adorn endless streets.

“What attracts me to night scenes is that places which appear ordinary during the day often become incredibly dramatic once the lights are turned on at night,” Lin Bao Ling says.

On his canvases, cities wander between light and shadow, movement and stillness. Their nocturnal beauty is at once captivating and coolly elegant.

Lin further incorporates the techniques of traditional ink painting into his oil paintings and prints. Whether depicting the vast empty spaces of snowy nights in New York or the rain-soaked streets of Taipei rendered hazy through layered washes, his works convey a sense of ethereal openness while also suggesting the loneliness of living amidst worldly prosperity.

“I think light and shadow are mutually dependent and mutually opposing,” he explains. “The stronger the light, the deeper the shadow.”

The exhibition also features selected works from his student years in Singapore. Compared with his recent paintings, whose nocturnal palettes are dominated by deep blues and rich purples, these earlier works reveal more vibrant reds, yellows, oranges, and greens. Viewers can clearly sense how different latitudes, climates, and even states of mind have influenced the artist’s development.
