Wandering Light and Shadow: Emerging Artist Lin Bao Ling Turns Dreams into Brilliance
(CNA News Service, November 7, 2012, 2:47 PM)
Young artist Lin Bao Ling did not receive his first diploma until the age of twenty-five in Singapore. His educational background and life experience differ greatly from those of most young artists. Yet throughout his journey, he has never been uncertain about his artistic path. He has always known his dream clearly—to record every city night he has walked through.
Slim in appearance, Lin Bao Ling has had an unusual educational journey. Under the firm conviction of his father, both he and his brother were homeschooled from an early age. During those years, he was free from the constraints of conventional schooling, allowing his mind and creativity to develop with openness and independence. Lin says that his late father's unwavering beliefs profoundly influenced him—not only in his personality but also in his artistic practice, giving him the courage to be different and the determination not to merely repeat what others had done before.
After being homeschooled, he left for Singapore at the age of thirteen and earned his Bachelor of Arts with Honours at twenty-five. He later returned to Taiwan and was, at the time of this interview, pursuing doctoral studies in the Ink Painting Program at the Graduate Institute of Fine Arts of National Taiwan Normal University. Having shifted from Western oil painting to the realm of Eastern ink painting, he merged seemingly incompatible traditions into new possibilities. The spirit of ink painting can be seen throughout his oil works: expanses of empty space and diffusion effects create a unique and intriguing dialogue between East and West.
In 2011, Lin won First Prize at the Fourth King Car Young Oil Painting Award with his masterful treatment of light and shadow. With the support of the King Car Education Foundation, he presented a selection of new works in December of the following year. His recent creations have focused primarily on urban and street scenes. In his memories, streets exist in a single palette of blue and black. Though seemingly cold and restrained, the images remain fluid, retaining the dynamism of cinematic sequences even after being transferred onto canvas. By employing large amounts of water, he creates blurred landscapes filled with flowing light and shadow, moving between abstraction and representation while expressing the uncertainty born from opposing forces—right and wrong, truth and illusion, affirmation and denial.
Many young artists experience confusion and struggle while searching for their own style, yet such uncertainty seems absent from Lin Bao Ling, who has always possessed a clear sense of direction. Compared with some artists who worry about the future of their creative careers, Lin appears remarkably steadfast and confident.
The ever-changing light and shadow of the night continue to illuminate the dreams of this young artist. Lin Bao Ling Solo Exhibition was on view through December 30 at the King Car Cultural & Art Center Taipei, inviting the public to experience his work free of charge.
