 BY 編輯部 2021-01-18

Maggie Lin

Lin Bao-Ling

“During 2020, I spent much of my time creating work at home. I’ve largely lived alone, so my outings were usually limited to buying groceries, sourcing materials, attending gallery meetings, or exercising. There were times when I wouldn’t leave the house for two or three days at a stretch.”

Artist LIN Bao Ling

“I had been exhibiting professionally for fourteen years by then, and I approached every exhibition with great caution and seriousness. I painted day and night—sometimes even dreaming about painting. There were periods when my anxiety became so intense that I dreamt my paintings were damaged. It was a cycle that seemed to repeat itself over and over.”

“For this exhibition, I created a new work specifically in response to the theme Our Home. What is a home? Dictionaries define it as a place where family members live together. But if that were true, would an elderly person living alone be considered homeless? That doesn’t seem right to me. I believe a person can accompany oneself. Even a single individual can constitute a home. Any place that offers warmth and allows you to feel at ease can be called home. In the midst of cold and harsh conditions, we pitch a tent, and that too becomes a temporary home.”

“The Tang dynasty poet Li Bai once wrote, ‘Heaven and earth are but an inn for the ten thousand things.’ The word ‘inn’ suggests a temporary lodging place. Everything is transient; no family member can remain by our side forever. That idea inspired this painting. As someone who lives alone, my brushes, paints, and tools keep me company in the studio. In a way, they are like family to me. They quietly receive all of my joys, sorrows, anger, and happiness.”

Our Home

— Exhibition Summary

Our Home (Taiwanese: Un Tau, meaning “our home”) was a group exhibition that explored the meaning of home in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. As travel restrictions, social distancing, and prolonged periods of staying indoors reshaped everyday life, the exhibition invited viewers to reconsider what “home” truly means beyond its physical form.

The title carries a dual meaning. In Taiwanese, Un Tau refers to one’s home, while the exhibition also associates the words with warmth, care, and the familiar conversations and concerns shared among family members. Home is presented not merely as a place of residence, but as a space of emotional connection, belonging, and support.

Featuring works by four Taiwanese artists, the exhibition approached the theme from different perspectives. One artist examined home as a system of balance and order through symbolic geometric forms. Another explored how memories and the passage of time shape our understanding of home, while a third presented home as a nurturing vessel capable of containing life’s joys and sorrows.

In Lin Bao-Ling’s works, illuminated tents, layered triangular forms of paint, and references to the “Home” button on mobile devices suggested that home can exist as a psychological refuge as much as a physical location. Through these visual metaphors, home becomes a place of safety, comfort, and personal belonging in an increasingly uncertain world.

Together, the exhibition proposed that home is not simply a building, but a living network of memories, relationships, emotions, and hopes that accompanies us wherever we go.
