Looking Outward Together
Looking Outward Together
It has been more than a decade since I completed my commissioned project for the CapitaLand Group.
Over these years, I have been fully focused on my own artistic practice and have not taken on any commissioned works.
Personally, I do not reject commissioned work.
I am aware that some artists consider it too commercial and therefore choose not to accept such projects.
However, looking back at art history, many significant masterpieces were in fact created as commissions. For example, Michelangelo’s ceiling paintings in the Sistine Chapel, and Rembrandt’s The Night Watch.
The list is endless.
From the perspective of art history, commissioned works are not inherently lacking in artistic value, nor do they necessarily diminish the creative integrity of the work.
This, to me, suggests that commissioned works are not necessarily devoid of artistic significance.
By chance and circumstance, I was invited through Soka Art to create a commissioned snowscape painting for the actor James Wen.
It was a very pleasant and rewarding creative experience.
Mr. Wen is a warm and kind person. He expressed that he greatly appreciated my exhibition work Snow Country XVI.
However, since that piece had already been acquired by a collector, we discussed creating a new work inspired by similar ideas.
The commission came with a high degree of freedom.
The work was intended to continue the elevated, bird’s-eye perspective and the luminous snowscape composition of Snow Country XVI, while also incorporating three snowmen symbolizing his family of three, as well as his fondness for Mount Fuji.
Aside from these elements, I was given complete freedom in execution, with no requirement for preliminary sketches or strict deadlines.
From conception to completion, the process took approximately five months.
During this period, I continuously adjusted, refined, and allowed the work to settle over time.
It was a relatively slow process, but it gradually brought the painting to a point of resolution that I was satisfied with.
The final work was titled Snowing Hope (Snow Hope).
The English title is not a direct translation, but rather:
Looking Outward Together
This phrase is derived from a line by the French writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry:
After finishing the work, I often wondered whether it would meet Mr. Wen’s expectations.
Later, I was relieved to learn that he expressed his appreciation for the piece and enjoyed it very much.
I am also sincerely grateful to Mr. James Wen and Soka Art.

A Commissioned Work After a Long Time

This, to me, suggests that commissioned works are not necessarily devoid of artistic significance.
However, early in my career, I took on an illustration commission in which the client’s ideas changed repeatedly, and there were many requirements and creative constraints. That experience made me especially cautious whenever I accepted commissioned work afterward. Fortunately, all of the commissions I received later—including one for Singapore Telecommunications (Singtel)—went smoothly, and the collaborations were both successful and enjoyable.
