Some things outside of art are important and full of interest; they are often the very sources that spark creative inspiration.
Luminance Artist Lin Bao-ling: Both Painting and Mountain Climbing Are Processes of Aesthetic Appreciation
As an artist who also deeply loves and respects nature, Lin Bao-ling differs from Huang Yi-chung in that he possesses the soul of a mountaineer. Climbing is a habit for him; since childhood, his father often took the family on travels, with hiking being their most frequent outdoor activity. In the mountains, life is entirely different from the everyday routine. One particular climbing experience forced Lin to return to the most basic awareness of survival: a mid-altitude mountain, a novice climber, freezing weather, and a heavy downpour. Lin lent his thermal raincoat to the beginner, even as his own face turned pale from the cold. He realized that before one can enjoy the pleasure of the experience, one must be fully prepared.
Just like artistic creation, Lin views mountain climbing and art as interconnected—both are processes of aesthetic appreciation. He notes with a smile that both things he loves require expensive equipment and tools, and both can seem a bit impractical. However, both demand persistence and a step-by-step approach before one can finally achieve a beautiful vista or a pleasing painting.
Lin Bao-ling's works primarily focus on nocturnal cities and streetscapes. His static scenes and monochromatic streets appear cold yet fluid. Like a cinematic lens, he brings streets to life on paper while maintaining a sense of movement. The sense of detachment in his work reflects his own tendency to observe the world as an outsider. Despite disliking crowds, he lives next to the bustling lights of the Shida Night Market. He loves climbing but is indifferent to reaching the summit; instead, he uses the climb to completely empty his mind, focus his spirit, expel the polluted city air, and simply enjoy everything the mountain forest has to offer.
