If life is compared to a journey, do you look forward to a stable and comfortable routine, or an adventurous trip full of changes and challenges? Perhaps the answer is not a strict binary choice; one can also let their free will run wild on a stable foundation, painting a more vibrant palette of life. Mr. Kao Kuei-pin, who previously served in the military, chose to retire early as he approached retirement age. He gave up an enviable salary to start a small food business. For him, being able to constantly encounter new knowledge and continuously learn in a brand-new field is the most ideal lifestyle.

Even earlier, Kao Kuei-pin used to think of galleries as distant spaces, accessible only to the wealthy and those well-versed in art. It wasn't until about ten years ago, when he attended a charity auction and acquired an oil painting by a Chinese artist, that things changed. On that occasion, he met a professional gallery manager, who later became a close friend to both him and his wife. Since then, they frequently visited galleries to enjoy exhibitions and began collecting art. He eventually realized that appreciating art can be a relaxed and natural experience, without any added pressure. Furthermore, finding like-minded people while enjoying art—to chat and talk about favorite pieces—is a truly invaluable bonus!

"Because we visit exhibitions at galleries, we've met many art lovers from different fields. Everyone has different professions and backgrounds, so their perspectives on the artworks vary greatly. Being able to make friends and exchange our unique views is a change that happened in our lives after getting into art, and it's a very precious experience for us," he shared with great enthusiasm.

Kao Kuei-pin and his wife frequently visit exhibitions and travel together. Their art collection includes oil paintings, watercolors, sculptures, and prints; due to their love for travel, some of these pieces were purchased during their trips abroad. When speaking about his preferred art styles, he noted, "Visual appeal is very important to me. I love using the scenes constructed by artists to imagine myself being right inside them. The artist Lin Bao-ling's work, Castle in the Snow, depicts New York’s Central Park as a dreamlike wonderland. When I traveled to New York, I couldn't wait to visit Central Park to find the exact scene from the painting. To me, artistic creation transforms reality, and appreciating a piece of art is just like traveling—it’s a way to understand the world."

Regarding his future collection plans, he shared, "If my means permit, I hope to steer my collection toward classic pieces that represent an era." He believes that the process of collecting is also a learning journey to refine one's taste, and that reading related books and journals, as well as exchanging ideas with others, are excellent ways to achieve this. "When it comes to my collection, I look at it from the perspective of 'giving to receive.'" He wants to keep his collection flowing like living water and fully embody the concept of sharing—much like his outlook on life, which embraces change, allowing him to fully experience every moving scene at every single moment.
