The Tainan Art Museum’s brand-new exhibition, “See the Light, See the Shadow,” takes art appreciation and education as its starting point to explore the tripartite relationship between light, form, and shadow in artistic creation. Here, even a sun-drenched wall transforms into a living artwork, with the sun itself acting as the artist. The exhibition opens on November 9 in Galleries K and L on the third floor of Building 2. Featuring 19 participating artists, the showcase includes 17 two-dimensional works and two installation pieces. In a unique twist, the daily shifting light and shadow across the walls of Gallery J will also be treated as an exhibit. Throughout the exhibition's run, time-lapse photography will capture the silhouettes of visiting patrons, weaving them into an unconventional light art installation.

Light dominates human civilization, shaping the way we see, influencing our visual pathways, and serving as an enduring theme in artistic expression. Presenting the effects of light on a two-dimensional canvas marked a monumental milestone in art history. In the early 17th century, Caravaggio spearheaded a light-and-shadow revolution in Western painting, creating unprecedented dramatic tension and emotional depth—an innovation that would profoundly influence later masters like Vermeer and Rembrandt. Even when the Impressionists approached the canvas with a different philosophy to tackle the relationship between light and color, the trio of light, form, and shadow remained the critical elements of painting.

Through two sub-themes—"Manifesting Energy Through Light" and "Understanding Brightness Through Shadow"—the exhibition highlights the profound meaning that light and shadow carry across different artworks, exploring the tripartite relationship between light, form, and shadow. Where form and color exist, light grants visibility, and shadow imparts a touch of the extraordinary.

Intriguingly, the exhibition also leverages the architectural signatures of Building 2—its fractured roof and pristine white walls—to transform the wall of Gallery J on the third floor into a site-specific installation. Here, the creator is none other than the sun, rising in the east and setting in the west, which we gaze upon every day. Ever since Building 2 opened, the wall of Gallery J has been a breathtaking backdrop, devouring the camera and phone storage of countless tourists. As sunlight bathes this wall and floor, it feels as though the sun is continuously sculpting a one-of-a-kind, ever-changing masterpiece of light and shadow.

Light and shadow are not only vital compositional elements in art; the imagery they evoke also serves as a frequent metaphor for artists to heighten psychological and emotional states in their work. In this exhibition, the artists draw upon their personal observations of light and shadow, using their creations to manifest the interplay of brightness and shade across time and space—ultimately capturing and freezing the fleeting, ephemeral moments of light and shadow through their art.
