The title A Dance of Scattered Shadows,is drawn from Li Bai (李白)’s poem Drinking Alone Under the Moon(《月下獨酌》). Through imagination, Li Bai sought to dispel loneliness, expressing emotion and finding solace in poetic beauty. Similarly, LIN Bao Ling transforms light and shadow into artistic creation, capturing different images within the night and projecting subconscious emotions and reflections onto nocturnal scenes. The landscapes before his eyes become shifting exchanges of “light” and “shadow,” moving between abstraction and representation to create flowing, diffused imagery reminiscent of ink wash painting, capturing dreamlike atmospheres suspended in time and space. Though separated by centuries, both artists accompany themselves with moonlight and shadow—as if dancing with their own projections, continuing the ever-changing beauty of impermanence.

As a Taiwanese artist born in the 1980s, Lin Bao Ling approaches art from a perspective distinct from many of his contemporaries. After completing his master’s degree in ink painting at graduate school, he chose not to pursue a doctoral path, instead devoting his passion entirely to artistic creation. Persistently forging his own direction, he continues to challenge himself and grow, allowing those who follow his work to witness the remarkable evolution of this young Taiwanese artist. One scholar once remarked:

“His oil paintings possess the abstraction of the West while carrying the spirit of Eastern splashed-ink aesthetics. Though they are paintings, they evoke the fluidity and intentionally blurred focus of photography. The dramatic contrasts of light and shadow often remain unforgettable long after viewing.”

Lin Bao Ling excels at depicting the nightscapes of different cities, weaving into his works memories of places central to his life—Taiwan, New York, and Singapore. The dramatic contrasts of nocturnal light and shadow connect familiar urban scenery with personal and collective recollections.

He works with ink and acrylic on drafting film, and also combines oil and acrylic on canvas, emphasizing fluidity and rapid movement. Whether capturing the fleeting transformations of urban light, depicting carousels, or staging surreal fantasies of opulent palaces and nocturnal dreamscapes, these elements crystallize within shifting time and space into fragments of fairy tale—fictional realities.

For the first time, Lin Bao Ling presents the solo exhibition Scattered Dancing Shadows at Soka Art Taipei. In this new 2016 series, he experiments with video works while extending the central visual language of his nocturnal city imagery: high contrast, blur, fluidity, combined with elements of dance, projection, and mirrored reflections. Filmed in locations such as pedestrian bridges, arcades, and streets, the rapid alternation between color and monochrome imagery shifts across different spatial and temporal settings, alluding to the artist’s fleeting emotions and the ever-changing nature of the world.

In the paintings, beyond continuing his longstanding focus on light and shadow, the new works intensify contrast, allow paint to flow more freely, and incorporate scraping techniques that introduce a sense of frenzy and speed. Strong contrasts between brightness and darkness reduce descriptive detail, allowing color and light themselves to become the protagonists. Out of turbulence emerges stillness; within chaos, tranquility is sought. The resulting style is increasingly contemporary, distinctive, and bold.

On November 5, Soka Art hosted the exhibition opening and an accompanying talk, featuring a conversation between King Car Art Director Vic Te Chang and Huang Yi-Chung, founder of Shaoyou Island Painting Society, alongside the artist. Combining academic depth with an engaging atmosphere, the event invited Lin Bao Ling to discuss the concepts behind his new works while sharing with visitors different perspectives on the artist and his practice.
