"When will the moon be clear and bright? With a cup of wine in my hand, I ask the blue sky... It rounds the vermillion tower, stoops to the silk-curtained door, and shines on the sleepless."
The title "Shining on the Sleepless" is drawn from Su Shi’s famous Ci poem, Shui Diao Ge Tou. In the stillness of a sleepless night, feelings of attachment and longing naturally emerge. Just as Su Shi used words, Lin Bao Ling uses painting to express his inner world—attempting to understand the rules of the world, learning to accept the laws of nature, and appreciating the waxing and waning cycles of life.
Known as the "Artist of Chiseled Light," Lin Bao Ling expertly utilizes the rapid, flowing characteristics of ink. Whether capturing the fleeting interplay of light and shadow in a changing city or employing surreal scenography—such as carousels, grand palaces, and night fantasias—he freezes shifting time and space into a fairy-tale, theatrical atmosphere: a form of fictional reality. The artist constantly navigates the flow and displacement of light and shadow, oscillating and pulling between the abstract and the figurative. This creates a fluid, blurred visual effect akin to ink wash, capturing a spatial atmosphere where time and space feel like a dream.
A New Chapter with Soka Art
Soka Art has long insisted on discovering emerging artists with its unique vision, dedicating itself to promoting Asian contemporary art as an international gallery with influence across the continent. This autumn, Soka Art officially begins an exclusive collaboration with Lin Bao Ling, standing together in the art market with a vision toward the international stage.
This exhibition weaves together several series created between 2013 and 2015. Through both intentional and subconscious evolution, his works have transformed:
"Burning": Uses browns and golds to depict the "Fire Lion," a religious ritual symbolizing the dispelling of calamities, serving as a metaphor for the nature of revolutionary struggle.
"Light Parade": Employs pink hues to depict night-time light shows in amusement parks, dialectically examining the relationship between light/shadow and fairy tale/reality.
"Night Fantasia": Constructs surreal images through the "collage" of small toys and existing landscapes, exploring the boundary between reality and the absurd.
"Palace Light and Shadow": Taking inspiration from the "room boxes" (miniature palace models) in the Museum of Miniatures, this series explores fictionality versus reality, depicting the fleeting nature of wealth, power, and materialism.
"Ferris Wheel and Merry-Go-Round": Examines the two sides of the same coin: joy and sorrow.
"Night Mooring": Uses anchored boats to express the contradictory desire to both travel far and return to shore.
The common thread is that these were all completed in a state of "sleeplessness." The compositions are consistently formed by opposing elements—mutually generating and constraining one another—where the intense interplay of light and shadow remains the lead protagonist.
The Contemporary Spirit of Ink
As a representative of Taiwan's new generation of ink painters, Lin Bao Ling uses the language of contemporary painting to express a new aesthetic charm. Whether through the visual impact and tension of his work or his mastery of new media and materials, he has established a signature style uniquely his own.
A painting is an overlap of moments in life; a concatenation of past and present memories. Viewing his evocative landscapes is a way to revisit, cherish, and extend one's own memories. The indispensable fluctuations of light and shadow in Lin's work—resembling the waxing and waning of the moon—evoke the joys and sorrows of human parting and reunion. Ultimately, his work suggests that we should not strive for flawlessness in all things, but rather learn to embrace both sides of existence and view the world through a dialectical lens.
