Ten Artists, Ten Years of Time Passed
November 1, 2018 — by Yang Wan-Ju, Art Investment
The cross-year contemporary art exhibition 10 YEARS OF SOKA SO YOUNG presented at Soka Art Taipei revisits the fruitful achievements of SOKA SO YOUNG, an open-call program that Soka Art has cultivated for over a decade. The exhibition also brings together ten artists selected from among past participants: Lin Bao Ling, Kao Yi-Sheng, Chang Teng-Yuan, Hsu Che-Yu, Hsu Pei-Cheng, Huang Yen-Chao, Liu Hsin-Yi, Tsai Kun-Lin, Lai Yi-Chih, and Hsieh Yi-Ju.
Just as the open-call program did not categorize submissions by medium during selection, the more than twenty works featured in this exhibition are equally diverse in form, encompassing painting, video, photography, installation, and even art toys.

Following Traversal Project exhibition in July of the previous year, which brought together 18 artists, Soka Art Taipei began working even more closely with emerging Taiwanese artists. The SOKA SO YOUNG exhibition—traditionally held at Soka Art Tainan—was also presented in the Taipei space for the first time.
On the opening day, many participants reminisced about their initial interactions with Soka Art, creating a warm and lively atmosphere throughout the venue. Several artists recalled that they had still been students when they first applied to the open-call program. Being selected and exhibiting at Soka Art Tainan marked not only their first experience showing work in a commercial gallery setting, but also their first opportunity to sell artworks. The positive and supportive exchange with the gallery further strengthened their determination to pursue full-time artistic practice, making the experience a highly memorable milestone and an important part of their professional development.

It is evident to all that the artists who once appeared relatively inexperienced have, over the years, continued to achieve remarkable success—receiving recognition through domestic and international art awards, residency programs, and biennials. Their accomplishments also reflect the discerning vision of Soka Art’s selection program, which has become an important platform for identifying and supporting emerging artistic talent.
The creative energy and developmental trajectories accumulated through years of navigating the art world are brought together once again through this exhibition’s review and reflection, allowing the public to witness and reassess the strength and growth of Taiwan’s younger generation of artists.

Selected for SOKA SO YOUNG in 2010, Lin Bao Ling later signed with Soka Art in 2015. Beyond the dreamlike nocturnal landscapes for which he is widely known, many of the works presented in this exhibition are based on The Nameless Little Guy—a figure representing the artist himself that first appeared in his printmaking works in 2006. The character has since been further developed into the form of art toys.
Through Little Guy, the artist conveys fragments of daily life and personal emotions, creating works that are approachable and resonate deeply with viewers.
賴易志 presents Those Hidden Landscapes, a photographic series selected for the 2016 Taipei Biennial 2016. Constructed from industrial remnants and urban waste materials, the works depict unusual landscapes. The deliberately bleached treatment of the imagery appears poetic, yet also reflects a collective attitude of indifference, prompting deeper reflection.
黃彥超’s Paralysis · Flow, built upon extensive use of plastic materials, reflects feelings of powerlessness and anxiety in contemporary life. Although these objects are drawn from everyday reality, they remain strangely inaccessible to participation. In the artist’s view, “they are fractured from one another, yet simultaneously form new relationships.” Through his artistic intervention, a sense of order emerges from their chaotic state.

許旆誠 focuses on the unfolding of time, approaching his work through observations and experiences drawn from everyday life. By piecing together fragmented moments of the ordinary, he constructs a composite sense of time itself. In The Labyrinth of Time, the artist seeks to highlight the hope embedded within daily existence:
“The birth of my daughter made me realize deeply that it was as if I were seeing the world anew; through her eyes, everything becomes a first-time experience.”
The Parrot Man Series, developed in recent years by 張騰遠, explores civilization on a post-apocalyptic Earth. Through the discoveries, reconstructions, and even misunderstandings of the Parrot Man figures, the series reflects the contemporary condition in which an overwhelming influx of information blurs the boundaries between truth and illusion.
Marking his tenth year as a full-time artist, Chang Teng-Yuan notes that he has always maintained a certain distance when working with the Parrot Man character, but now intends to incorporate more of his personal emotions into the series. In Solo Mission: Party of Three, the Parrot Man stands atop a vast mountain, celebrating joyfully at the sight of dawn breaking through dark clouds—also reflecting the artist’s state of mind after a decade-long artistic journey.

The ten artists who emerged through the SOKA SO YOUNG selection program are brought together in a rare reunion, presenting diverse interpretations of art through distinct creative styles, media, and concepts. Through the exhibition Ten Lights, Ten Years, the artists not only revisit their former selves, but also reveal their continued development along the trajectories of their artistic growth.
Since its establishment in 2007, the SOKA SO YOUNG open-call program has been continuously promoted by Soka Art. Its ongoing commitment to supporting emerging talent continues to inspire anticipation for the outstanding artists who will be discovered in the future.
