Enchanted by the layers formed through the illumination of light at night, viewing Lin Bao Ling’s paintings feels like walking out from the darkness toward the place closest to the light—like climbing a staircase, step by step entering another realm.

Stillness, Darkness, and Light
Raised through homeschooling from an early age, Lin Bao Ling moved to Singapore with his family at the age of thirteen. His works are primarily created using acrylic and oil paint, and he is best known for paintings depicting the interplay of light and shadow within urban nightscapes. In 2006, he received a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Fine Arts. While studying at LASALLE College of the Arts, he won numerous awards and also began receiving invitations from galleries to exhibit his work.
He has described his creations as being composed of constantly shifting and flowing light and shadow, forming blurred landscapes and indistinct structures without clearly defined scenery or objects. Through these works, he seeks to express a kind of spiritual atmosphere, inner emotion, and even what he perceives as the hidden reality behind appearances. He explains that the symbolic darkness and light in his paintings present a state of instability and transience—something wavering and fleeting, vanishing in an instant.

Traversing Imagination, the Symbolic, and the Real
Spanning the distinct territories of photography and painting, his works embody a polarized dialectical relationship. Beginning from the spatial mode of photography and moving into the flat pictorial field of painting, the viewing experience repeatedly revisits prior and present visual perceptions through multiple rereadings. This demonstrates that Lin Bao-Ling does not merely reproduce the familiar appearances we once recognized within the image. Instead, his works lead us to perceive absent things in the same way we encounter real objects in everyday life. Within the painterly temporality that traverses the Imaginary, the Symbolic, and the Real, he suggests the transformation of planar space, revealing art as a form of spatial experience.
