 Reflections as a Jury Member of the 7th King Car Painting Prize

I’m honored to have been invited to serve as one of the final jurors for the 7th King Car Painting Prize.

Moving from the role of a participant in the past to that of a juror now,
I felt both a sense of caution and a certain emotional reflection.

In life,
there are times when we receive recognition we may not fully deserve,
and times when we do not receive the recognition we perhaps should have.
I hope we can face these moments with a calmer mind,
be honest with ourselves,
and act as our own juror.

關於金車青年油畫獎的兩三件事 / 評審篇

要從155件參賽作品中選出得獎作品，從來都不是一件簡單的事，要考慮進來的因素很多，要捨棄的也很多，遇到文不對題卻技法高妙的作品時總令人惋惜，看見創作理念很優秀卻在畫面處理上有所瑕疵的作品時也替他可惜；但比賽就是這樣，評審之一的藝術家林葆靈在頒獎典禮上說，藝術要自己當自已的評審，要創作出能得到自我認可的作品；另一位評審藝術家余廷彥也說，藝術獎不是終點，而是個開始。

對於曾是「金車青年油畫獎」首獎得主的他們，想必有著更深刻的感受，對於此次評審的過程中，我們著重在於對台灣各地風景的紀錄與呈現，基金會性質的油畫獎本身更重視青年創作者是如何看待這片土地，如何以自我的方式記錄自己生活的環境，畢竟在我們看來藝術有著比單純呈現"技法"外，更重要的使命與任務，這是藝術家特有的天賦與禮物。

然而，評審作業還沒結束，我們還在其中挑選擁有未來發展性的創作者，期盼能與之一起創造更多可能。

A Few Things About the King Car Young Artist Award / Jury Perspective

Selecting award-winning works from 155 entries is never an easy task. There are many factors to consider and just as many things to set aside. When encountering works that are technically accomplished yet deviate from the theme, one cannot help but feel regret. Likewise, when seeing works with strong conceptual ideas but flaws in their visual execution, there is also a sense of disappointment. But that is the nature of a competition. 

As one of the jurors, artist Lin Bao-Ling said during the award ceremony that artists must act as their own judges and create works that can earn their own approval. Another juror, artist Yu Ting-Yen, also noted that an art award is not an endpoint, but a beginning. 

For them—both former first-prize winners of the King Car Young Artist Award—these reflections are likely even more profound. During this year’s judging process, we placed particular emphasis on the documentation and representation of landscapes across Taiwan. As a foundation-based oil painting award, there is a strong focus on how young artists perceive this land, and how they record their lived environments in their own ways. After all, from our perspective, art carries a mission beyond the mere display of technical skill; it is a unique gift and responsibility of the artist. 

However, the judging process is not yet complete. We are still selecting artists with strong potential for future development, in the hope of creating more possibilities together with them.
