Dawn in the Night City

By Penny Kuo (graduate student, National Taiwan Normal University)

How long has it been since you stopped and looked at the city you're in? It may be the hometown where you grew up, the place where you realized your dreams, or the sanctuary where you recharge and take a break. Wherever you are, have you ever truly paused to observe and appreciate it? And as you gaze upon it, does it reflect back upon yourself? Why are you in this place? What do you want to achieve? Pondering over who I really am...

Looking at Lin Bao Ling's artwork, I can't help but think about the time when we forgot to care about the environment around us, this organic entity that nurtures our lives. Especially in the onslaught of darkness, amidst the dazzling lights, do we only see the surface beauty and overlook the hidden darkness and shadows beneath the mesmerizing glow? Bao Ling is a natural storyteller. Though his paintings seemingly depict city night scenes, they actually outline the stories, secrets, and aspirations deep within us. The night city undoubtedly brings prosperity, romance, and joyous scenery, but beneath the shimmering lights, it is accompanied by shadows of loneliness, solitude, alienation, and escapism. However, in his brushstrokes, light and shadows blend and intertwine in the dark night, presenting a subtle warmth that allows us to find ourselves within the paintings and discover a glimmer of hope.

This kind of sentiment deeply resonates within the hearts of all viewers. One fan (Fritz) left a comment for Bao Ling, saying, "Seeing the night scenes in your paintings, they actually exist during the day. It reminds me of how I always search for light in the darkness, treating the daytime as night and the night as day in my life. I give up the readily available light of the day and desperately chase after the attention-grabbing rays of the night. I gaze at the carousel, but I am powerless to change. It's so difficult to live this way. Therefore, I've decided to step out of the night and no longer live a life with reversed day and night. Thank you and your artworks for helping me see and understand myself. Thank you!" Undoubtedly, everyone finds a rebirth of dawn through his brush.

As Bao Ling described his creations, "During countless sleepless nights, I depict the ambiguous light and shadows of the night city on canvas/paper, repeatedly experiencing the night. The abundant artificial lights in the city bring convenience to people but also result in light pollution and energy consumption. We have preferences and excessive infatuations with certain things, making us blind. However, in reality, there is often no absolute good or bad. In the process of creation, I constantly adjust the balance between adding and reducing light, between controlling and letting go, representation and abstraction... oscillating between two extremes."

It is because of this that in Bao Ling's dreamlike night city, we can easily project ourselves into a certain place. Perhaps we are frolicking on a joyful street, playing in a bustling amusement park, feeling the cold stimulation amidst scenes of heavy snowfall, or licking our wounds in obscure corners. Regardless, Bao Ling attempts to convey warmth through his paintings, telling us that everything is a process that will eventually become the past. The end of the night leads to daylight, and the two extremes are closely intertwined. There is no absolute, only the present moment's true feelings and the courage and strength to face the dawn.

Lin Bao Ling, like his paintings, exudes a dreamlike poetic and mysterious aura. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Fine Arts at National Taiwan Normal University and has held numerous exhibitions both domestically and internationally, with fans and collectors scattered around the world. If you have seen his works, you will undoubtedly find resonance within the paintings, evoking certain memories within your heart. If you haven't seen his artworks yet, you can catch a glimpse through the poetry of Susan, the art manager at Soka Art: "The night assaults the city, grinding in a black and dark loneliness, and the cooled moisture evaporates under scrutiny. The distant light of countless stars cannot be described, and the sleepless brush withers, restoring the memory wall. The melancholic curls are dyed with blue and purple elegance, collaging the passing light and cutting out the dialogue of dreamlike bubbles. Unextinguished candlelight reads wisdom and divine power for millions of years, the eternal soul of youth continues to extract new ink, forging a future with a polished, magical purple pen, filling the cracks in time and space with hopeful light."
