Lin Bao Ling's proficiency with a paintbrush interplays light and dark to dramatic contrast. Fragmented shards of colour appear blinding from within these dark landscapes, perhaps to be considered flashes of hope emerging from desolate environments. What is striking about Lin's work is his ability to convey personal sentiments towards urban life, to an extent illustrating his inner turmoil. As a viewer you feel both the push and pull, the bright lights tinged with a haunting appeal.

To imagine yourself confronted with a scene such as 'Nocturne03071', brings about an overload to the senses, almost to the point of confusion. Appearing to be caught in the reflective state between abstraction and figuration, the viewer is engaged with an experience beyond just the visual realm, feeling as well as seeing. With his paintings exuding translucent appeal, at times reminiscent of stained glass, perhaps Lin is looking to connect on a more spiritual level.
Everyday scenes of urban life are broken down and disintegrated, forming a cohesion of colour that enhances the somewhat unseen elements of organic beauty found inside such concrete jungles. Lin wants the viewer to recognise that these are not purely paintings about cityscapes, more so about the hidden details found within.

Whilst remaining fundamentally abstract, the brain inevitably begins to comprehend form, particularly within paintings such as 'Nocturne03077,' where buildings become more recognisable.
Lin exerts a technical ability that is captivating through its energy. His aptitude for portraying light is executed with precision, provoking a visceral response within the viewer. Throughout the 'Nocturne' series, Lin retains a strong sense of emotion, illustrating the capacity of painting to involve an audience.
Currently a full-time artist, 27-year old Lin was born in Taiwan and moved to Singapore when he was 13. He received his BA (Hons) in Fine Arts from LASALLE-SIA College of the Arts in 2006. He was granted The Winston Oh Travel Award in 2005, later taking up the post of artist in residence at The Marina Mandarin hotel, Singapore in 2008.
