Rejuvenation of historic spaces has been a common practice around the world for a number of years. Now the trend is catching on in Taiwan. A disused train station in the east coast city of Taitung has been converted into a 'Railway Art Community'. In the second segment of our series on "Fostering Community Arts", we went to Taitung to find out how art and life has returned to the old station.

The last train left old Taitung station in 2001. The iconic train station slipped into the annuls of history. But the story doesn't end there. The control room from the days of Japanese colonial rule in Taiwan, and the ancient turntable, the levers that control the points and signals, the redundant platform signs, and other relics are enjoyed by visitors for their nostalgic beauty. Manager of the Taitung Theater, Liu Meiying(劉梅英), says the historic train station is a classic piece of architecture.

"The tracks and even the wooden sleepers we've preserved have become very popular paths for people to walk on today. It's a leisure space."

For residents of the small city of Taitung, this used to be the starting point of journeys to other places in pursuit of their dreams. When the old station was put out of commission, it was rejuvenated into an art community.

Taitung Theater Manager, Liu Meiying

"For Taitung citizens, this place shouldn't be a lofty high-art institution. This community should develop and be built together with the people."

Inside old engine house number 253, artists are busy at work. One of the main goals of the Taitung Railway Art Community is to connect with the local neighborhood. So resident artists use local materials in their creations, in the hope that they can build ties in the area.Young artist Lin Hongyin(林虹吟) draws inspiration from the driftwood and other things she finds washed up on the Taitung beach, while painter Lin Baoling(林葆靈) specializes in night scenes.

Resident Artist, Lin Baoling

"I hope people can realize that where they are living is actually very beautiful. It's worthwhile pausing for a moment to take in the scenery."

Working in harmony with the local community, the artists are bringing culture and breathing new life back into the old Taitung train station.
