Lin Bao Ling | Like a Dream

By Yan Xiao-xiao · Taipei

November 10, 2020

In Lin Bao Ling’s recent solo exhibition Like a Dream at Soka Art Taipei, one can observe a major leap in the artist’s work. Always fascinated by depicting nightscapes, he has stepped beyond the urban views he long gazed upon to embrace the snowy landscapes. What he witnessed in Tokamachi, Niigata Prefecture, during his trip to the Echigo-Tsumari Art Field in Japan in 2017 became the visual conceptual foundation for this exhibition.

Beneath a crisp, solitary full moon hanging high, mountain ranges stretch endlessly, with faint lights scattered across the pure white snow. The artist’s perspective—walking alone through the snow at night—possesses an aesthetic grace. It inevitably makes viewers feel as if looking into a mirror, glimpsing this solitary creator who nonetheless finds solace first within these quiet scenes. Lin paints on translucent multi-media vellum drafting film using acrylic paint heavily diluted with water, infusing the blue-black compositions with a dreamlike atmosphere reminiscent of watercolor washes. Amidst these chilly landscapes, a series of small-scale works titled Beneath the Snow employs a scraping technique to reveal subtle hints of spring beneath the snow-covered night, bringing a gentle resonance of life to the serene quietude.

Within this luminous, hazy realm, another thematic thread weaves through, standing distinct on its own. The character referred to by the artist as "The Nameless Little Guy" serves as a projection of his spiritual world—wandering alone across wildernesses, through overgrown weeds, and over stardust, while also appearing as small sculptures in the exhibition space. Blank, hollow eyes mirror a seemingly frozen crescent moon, and a sense of boundless solitude seems to permeate its realm. Yet Grim Reaper-like figures, which seem to carry the heaviest symbolism in the series, occasionally appear as comforting companions, opening up a new spiritual framework. Lin Bao Ling’s creation wanders between detachment and worldly engagement, painting a true reflection of his life’s journey.
