While going through an old hard drive recently, I came across an English essay Rurouni Kenshin and Truth, which I wrote back in 2004, during my time at LASALLE College of the Arts.

More than twenty years have passed since then.

I loved manga as a kid, and I wanted to be a manga artist. Later, when I entered art school, there was no manga department, so I majored in painting instead, and spent four happy years there. Gradually, without quite realizing it, I became a painter. But manga has always shaped how I think and create, and my love for anime and manga continues to this day.

Rurouni Kenshin is one of the works I love most. What drew me in particular was Kenshin’s constant self-questioning, his habit of interrogating whether what he was doing was right. That posture of endless self-reflection resonated deeply with me at the time, as I too was thinking about existence and searching for my own creative direction. This essay is a record of that stage of thinking. As I recall, my professor even gave me a good grade for it.

Over the years, in several works from The Nameless Little Guy series — including “Wielding the Brush in the Night,” “Slash II,” and “Slash III” — I’ve given my original character, the “Little Guy,” a cross-shaped scar on his face, appropriating and paying homage to the scar and swordsmanship of Kenshin. To me, that scar isn’t just a visual symbol; it represents a state of ongoing dialectical thinking, a continuous search for answers — and that’s a quality I hope to hold onto in myself, always.

Rereading this now, honestly, there are passages I don’t even remember writing, which makes me smile. I’ve also realized that some of the questions I’m still grappling with today actually started a long time ago.

Rurouni Kenshin and Truth

Lin Bao-Ling (2004)
PA5A

There are no facts, only interpretations.”
Friedrich Nietzsche

The 95 episodes anime, Rurouni Kenshin (Samurai X) that talks about truth and struggling is one of my favorite TV programme. I think the message it carries is quite true which is: universal truth does not exist, there is only personal truth, or to be more accurate, should call it belief. Just like Laozhi mentioned in Daodejing, in chapter two:

When beauty is abstracted, then ugliness has been implied;
when good is abstracted, then evil has been implied.

So alive and dead are abstracted from nature, difficult and easy abstracted from progress,
Long and short abstracted from contrast, high and low abstracted from depth,
Song and speech abstracted from melody, after and before abstracted from sequence.

One’s truth is getting from comparison and interpretation, which other may not agree; and even oneself would/might change his/her truth by other influence, so is definitely not universal truth.

The story is about the hero, Kenshin’s truth seeking journey and the conflict between him and his enemies and other people, caused by different truths/ believes they hold. What makes this animation interesting is that its characters are lost people who struggle in the troubled period of time. To quote Shishio (one of the characters of the anime, who intends to overthrown the Meiji government)“It was a time when supporters of the Emperor or the Shogun; Satsuma, Choushuu or Tosa; all raised their flags and fought and killed in the name of justice….” This anime is "character oriented." The characters are not forced into plot, and are very human; they have sorry, weaknesses, and confusions. The story is set in the Meiji era (began in 1868), which is a time of big change and great uncertainty of Japan. The animation integrated historical events, people and facts, so it revels some possible facts and creates some myths as well.

The wandering Samurai, Himura Kenshin who used to be the top assassin of the reformist group Ishin Shishi. He killed numerous people during the Bakumatsu, in the name of justice, and ended the rule of Shogun. He has given up killing afterward. The story emphasis on his painful feeling, confusion of killing and his struggle of finding truth to release his sin. He feels very guilty for killing, but he still did it in order to create a new era that everyone could live happily; but at the same time he was destroying peoples’ happiness. It is very contradict and disturbing. It is very hard for us to judge whether Kenshin did the right thing or not, it forces the audiences to think what is right and what is wrong. Unlike some other animations, the good guys and bad guys can be distinguished easily, and always emphasis that the winner is justice, and the justice will win; in Rurouni Kenshin, it is very hard to draw a line between good guys and bad guys in this anime, and I think that is what makes this animation interesting and different from other animations.

“ What is it we are seeking? Rest and happiness? No, nothing but Truth, however evil and terrible it may be… So are the ways of men marked out; if you desire peace of soul and happiness, believe; if you would become a disciple of Truth, enquire…”
-Nietzsche, in a letter to his sister

Kenshin traveled across Japan for nearly eleven years, while his comrades are enjoying the power and fortune; he carries a reverse-bladed sword (the sword means that his determination to stop killing, as the sword could not kill but protect himself and other people, to help the weak and underdogs and seeking the answer to atone his sin of killing. He needs the answer, to get “the peace of soul”; otherwise he would be devoured by the guilt.

The anime characters all have different believes and own truths. When their truths contradict to each other’s; conflicts are triggered. And the different believes are shaped by the up-brings and experiences of each individual character.

There are many interesting and thought-provoking dialogues in this anime, for instance in the first episode:

Goheh (bad guy):” you (refer to Kenshin) again. You are probably with the girl (Kaoru) on this “sword that protect life’ thing?”

Kenshin:” No. A sword is a killing weapon. Kenjutsu is the art of killing. Whatever pretty words you use to speak of it, this is its true nature. What miss Kaoru say are the words of one who has never dirtied her hands. An idealistic joke. But I like the joke better than the truth.

And:

"Shishio-sama and I share the same opinion that the Meji government is hopeless. But if Shishio's new era is also corrupted, I'll destroy it again." -Yukyosan Anji
"Will you spend all your life destroying? I hate the Meji government, and sometimes I want to destroy it too. But there are still people working hard, fighting for the future. Anji, be as desperate as you like. But as long as there are people who still want a good future, I will not let you judge who to live or die." -Sagara Sanosuke

Also:

“Have you forgotten? Aku soku sen. Slay evil immediately. That was the one truth about justice we both had in common" and "A man who can't hold on to his beliefs can only be pathetic -- dead or alive.”

Saitoh Hajime (captain of the 3rd troop of the Shinsengumi), said to Kenshin. While Kenshin feels so guilty about killing, Saitoh does not feels that way, as he said:

“… To protect the people of Japan and lay down our lives to maintain order, THAT is the job of the police. Just as the Shinsengumi (police troop) have done... And emotions play no part. It is normal to lose your life during a mission. I don't dwell upon it like the Battousai (kenshin), and I have no feelings of revenge to battle with. ... There is only one reason I remain impatient. It is because I am forever seeking my own brand of Justice - that of Aku Soku Sen (Slay evil immediately).”

Sometimes when the truths are completely opposite, conflicts and battles are triggered. One of kenshin’s greatest enemies, (who was the assassin who replaced Kenshin during the Bakumatsu), intends to overthrow the corrupted Meiji government in an extremely violent way, so to become the ruler of Japan and to revenge the people who once tried to burn him to death because of their fear of his ambition. He was seriously injured but survived. His motto is “survival of the fittest”. His famous lines are: “if you trust, you will be betrayed”, “Kill, or be killed”, “ the flesh of weak is the food of the strong.” And “ man’s true nature is violent and this world is a hell.” What he believes is what Kenshin totally disagreed, thus a duel between them is triggered in order to stop Shishio. In the end Shishio died and his ambition is shattered. Shishio was killed by self-burning as he fought beyond his body limit (15 minutes), because his body condition is abnormal due to the burn; instead of by Kenshin directly, but to certain degree it is Kenshin killed him. What is ironic is that Kenshin believes i n “no killing” and totally disagrees Shishio’s truth, but in the end what helps him shatters Shishio’s ambition is still —violence, which Shishio worships. Kenshin wins the duel and saved lives of many innocent people; but from the other point of view, Shishio also wins. As Kenshin’s victory proves that Shishio’s truth is correct. Also, what Shishio intends to do seems not very different from what Kenshin did during the revolution. The differences are that Shishio never mentioned the word “justice” as his reason for killing and killed more unnecessarily, and has strong desire of ruling. This reminds me of a saying: “ to judge whether an action is just or not, is depend on the motivation.” Although Kenshin had a noble motivation for killing, but the nature of what he and Shishio did are similar (or the same?)… Again it questions what is right and what is wrong, how to judge…

Seta Soujiro,Shishio’s important assistant, who has a very misfortune childhood. He was tortured and abused by the family that adopted him and he lost all facial expressions except smiling. A he learned from experiences that crying is of no use. He still got tortured no matter how hard he cried. One day he meets Shishio, who pointed out that his misfortune is because he is weak, and taught him his motto: “ the weak’s flesh is the food of the strong.” That very night he killed all the family members with the sword given by Shishio as they were going to torture him again. He believed that Shishio’s is an absolute truth, until he meets Kenshin because of the battles. Kenshin’s truth makes him confused and feels disturbing. For the first time, he has the doubt about Shishio’s truth and start to question, which is really truth. It was too disturbing to him and he decides to defeat Kenshin first instead of thinking about what is right and what is not. To me, he is like a drowning man, who would holds tightly of anything that is floating; even it is just a straw. He just needs a truth, a support, in order to go on his life, to survive. Just as Nietzsche said, “truth is an illusion that helps us cope with life” I think maybe Soujiro never fully believes in Shishio’s truth, as he said after he was defeated: "True, that night (the night he killed the family members who adopted him) I was smiling... but the truth is... I was crying" he just convinced himself to believe in Shishio’s truth, in order to justify his killing. In the end of the battle, he was defeated, and thought that Kenshin is correct because he wins, but to his surprise, kenshin says that the truth has to be find out by oneself, the winner is not equals to the person doing correct thing or is just. Soujiro also starts his truth-seeking journey afterward.

Komagata Yumi, Shishio’s lover, died during the fight of Kenshin and Shishio. Her death was extremely disturbing to me because it is Shishio who kills her and is purposely. She was absolutely devoted to Shishio, who took her away from the red light district and cared about her. She interfered their fight in the later part, as she knows that Shishio’s body cannot adjust the body temperature due to the burning, so Shishio’s body could not stand fighting which is more than fifteen minutes… She cuts in between Kenshin and Shishio, begging Kenshin to stop the fight, and Shishio takes the chance and stabbed his sword at Yumi and the sword goes through her body and pokes into kenshin’s belly, cause a serious wound on him. What is disturbing is that she died with a smile on her face and said she is happy that she finally could help Shishio for winning the fight. What is love is questioned here. To Kenshin (and most audiences I think), if you love someone you will never kill he or she, which is supposed to be a universal truth. Shishio says, “ she understands me most; and I understand her more than anyone does.” Shishio knew that she would be very happy to die for him so he has no hesitation. Maybe their love is the true love, which even transcends death.

There are still many other conflicts between truths (believes) that consist this anime. And in the end, Kenshin finds his truth that: to compensate those killed by him, he has to go on his life and continue helping more and more people and bring them happiness. Those killed by him may not agree this but this makes him, in Nietzsche’s word, “endure without being destroyed”.

It is a very profound and powerful anime to me. The messages it conveys, such as truth has to be find out by oneself; instead from other people, and what it implies: truth is actually belief; and belief is not truth, could also apply to the art making. As an art student, I am also seeking for the truth in order to have a direction to go on painting. Why I do painting? What I want to paint? Why I paint this way? What is beauty? What is art? … I constantly question myself so not to lose myself. Through questioning and truth seeking, instead of paint blindly, my work will develop and have deeper meaning. That may not be true; but is how I believe now, -- it’s my truth.

—— Friedrich Nietzsche

天下皆知美之為美,斯惡已;

引用劇中人物Makoto Shishio(企圖推翻明治政府)的一段話:

——Friedrich Nietzsche

「適者生存(Survival of the fittest)。」

Sōjirō Seta

Yumi Komagata

真理必須由自己去尋找,而不是由別人告訴你;
